A total of 50 cataract patients benefitted from the free cataract surgeries and over 500 frees medical glasses sponsored by Hon. Barri Daniel Mayuku, Executive Director, Projects DESOPADEC in conjunction with the African Cataract and Eye Foundation to mark the World sight Day, 2020 at the Africa Cataract Vision Center, Agbowu Medical Centre.

Speaking to newsmen at the rounding off of the programme, Hon. Barr. Daniel Mayuku revealed that as a member of the Board of Directors of the African Cataract and Eye Foundation, he has been working hand in hand with the foundation to ensure that patients who cannot afford the cost of eye surgeries, get their eyes restored for free.

He stressed that the cataract surgery and free medical glasses was targeted at the most vulnerable people who could not afford the cost of the surgery. Mayuku who cited a data from the World Health Organisation (WHO) disclosed that cataracts account for 51 percent of world’s blindness, adding that this terrifying statistics had made the free cataract surgeries a worthwhile venture.

Also speaking, the Director of the African and Eye Foundation, Dr. Mujuaye Okorodudu, said the foundation has been successfully operating cataract from the less privileged for free for the past 10 years, and he was delighted to partner with Hon. Mayuku, whom he described as “God sent”. Okorodudu who disclosed that the foundation also plans to reach out to most rural communities, especially in the riverine areas, advised residents to always see an ophthalmologist and shun self-medication or traditional medicine when they have any injury or eye disorder.

Dr. Okorodudu further informed residents that they will be back to the center on Wednesday next week, advised them to bring their love ones and relatives, who may be suffering from any eye disorder especially Cataract.

Mrs. Progress Ikomi one of the beneficiaries of the free cataract surgery, recalled how she was made to change glasses without any good result. “I have been told to buy several medicated glasses which I have always did with no result, until I came here and was told is cataract and successfully operated on. May God Almighty bless Hon. Mayuku for his benevolence” she said.

Another beneficiary of the free eye surgery Mr. Isaac Edun, disclosed how he thought the program was a scam when he saw the announcement on Facebook. “I only gave it a trial, because I never believed such expensive venture, can be done for free. Before the surgery, I didn’t use to see well, but God has sent Hon. Mayuku to restore my sight. May God continually keep him” he said.
