Tension is boiling over at the Prof. Chike Edozien State Secretariat in Asaba this morning after the shocking death of a senior civil servant allegedly beaten on the ministry premises.
Unity Ekpevbughe Adeda, a Deputy Director in the Ministry of Secondary Education, is dead. Family members and ministry sources claim he was mercilessly assaulted on Thursday by Commissioner for Secondary Education Kingsley Ashibogwu, his police orderly, and his driver.
According to accounts reaching Warri Voice, the confrontation began after Adeda had a disagreement with the Director of Examinations. The commissioner was called in. What followed, sources say, was pure horror.
One staff member who spoke under anonymity described the scene: “The commissioner asked him if he knew who he was. The man said he didn’t. That was when the order came. They beat him without mercy. He collapsed into a coma. Instead of rushing him straight to hospital, they even detained him first.”
Adeda was later taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, and subsequently died. His body was deposited at the Asaba Specialist Hospital mortuary.
A sister of the deceased confirmed the death but said the family is still waiting for full official briefing. “That is the information we have. There is even a video of the incident with the Director of Examinations,” she said.
The atmosphere at the secretariat is thick with fear and anger. Workers are talking in hushed tones. Many are asking how a commissioner could allegedly turn his official team into an assault squad inside a government office.
Commissioner Kingsley Ashibogwu has strongly denied the allegations. Speaking to reporters, he claimed he only responded to a distress call that a man was attacking staff and threatening to kill anyone who came near him.
“I asked if he knew me. He said he didn’t need to know me and that he would kill anyone that comes his way. He became violent and attacked me. I sustained wounds. I never ordered anybody to beat him. I am not a violent person. I cannot lie against a dead body,” the commissioner insisted.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has reportedly been informed of the incident. As of this report, the Delta State Police Command has not issued an official statement. Calls to the police spokesman went unanswered.
Civil servants at the secretariat are demanding answers. Many are calling for an immediate, independent investigation and for justice for the late Deputy Director.
