You Shall Receive Power by Rev. Dr. Lawrence O. Agbirekomi (JP)

As stated in Acts 1:8, a crucial factor exists that enables believers to navigate their earthly journey and fulfill their purpose within their immediate environment, that is, from their home or community. This cannot be achieved through personal ability or determination alone. When an individual receives the power of the Holy Spirit, they are revitalized and empowered to overcome sin and fulfill their purpose.

The term ‘power’ originates from the Greek word ‘dunamis,’ connoting divine ability or supernatural strength. When we speak of God’s power, we are referring to the same power of the Holy Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead. As a life-giving Spirit, He grants us life and enables us to fulfill our purpose.

Jesus’ final promise to His disciples was the bestowment of this power, assuring them that they would possess the power to become bold and effective witnesses to the gospel. Upon receiving this power, Peter, who had previously been intimidated and denied knowing Jesus, transformed into a bold advocate for the gospel of Christ.

Now, let us understand the purpose of the power that God will bestow upon us or has already bestowed upon us.

1. It empowers us to proclaim the gospel to sinners and convert them to the Christian faith. Every believer is called to be a witness, but effective witnessing demands spiritual empowerment. Through this spiritual empowerment, one comes to feel and see things from God’s perspective.

2. It empowers believers with boldness for effective witnessing. In Acts 2, Peter, filled with this power, boldly addressed the crowd, resulting in the addition of thousands of souls to the Church.

3. It empowers believers to perform miracles in His name. It enables us to rise above the natural realm and function in the supernatural. Our responsibility regarding demons is to cast them out. When we call upon Jesus’ name, we can experience deliverance from any challenge. Whatever struggles we face, they submit to the authority of Jesus’ name.

4. It empowers believers to triumph over sin and live a sanctified, victorious Christian life that honours God. Since the fall of man, humanity’s nature has been inclined towards sin. When this power is received, it enables one to live a God-like life reflective of God’s character, abide in the spiritual atmosphere of the Holy Spirit, and align with God’s purpose in order to fulfill it.

5. It empowers believers to exercise spiritual gifts. The Holy Spirit distributes these gifts among believers. Spiritual gifts are not reserved for pastors alone; they are available to all believers who desire them and wait patiently in prayer, just as the apostles did. Our growing hunger or deepening desire for more of God’s Spirit drives us to fast and pray, and it is God’s Spirit that releases God’s power within us. If you can open your heart, He will fill you to overflowing.
