The Need For Spiritual Growth (Part 2) by Rev. Dr. Lawrence O. Agbirekomi (JP)

As evident in Matthew 6:24-34, a clear distinction should be made between planning for the future and worrying about it. Proactive thinking is necessary, but anxiety should be avoided.

Planning for the future possesses a powerful propelling force, which can also provide direction. Nevertheless, it is necessary to live your life one day at a time. Hurrying through life causes worry about everything, and worry can only lead to feelings of frustration and doubt in one’s faith. It is vital to trust God enough with your future and allow Him to guide you to the place where He intends for you to be.

While dissatisfaction with our circumstances is a natural part of life, it is equally important to acknowledge that unhealthy comparison is misguided (2 Corinthians 10:12), and it reveals a lack of spiritual maturity.

Spiritual growth serves as a countermeasure to faithlessness. As you progress in grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, your faith in God concurrently evolves from being insignificant to substantial. The primary reason we worry excessively about mundane concerns, such as sustenance, beverages, or physical appearance, is that we have not attained full spiritual maturity. The more you mature in grace, the more you prioritize the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, recognizing that life’s value transcends basic needs. When you genuinely place God at the forefront of all your endeavors, success naturally follows, as all the good things in life will be added unto you.

Spiritual growth is crucial for overcoming every worry, doubt, and fear. We should avoid worrying about our lives to the point of depression and doubting God. As children of God, we should emulate the behavior of our own children, who trust us without question and depend on us for everything. As dear children of God, we should learn to trust God and depend on Him for all our basic needs. Everything you need in life is available in God; you just have to draw closer to Him, trust Him for it, and it will be yours. Deuteronomy 8:18 affirms that it is God who gives us the power to acquire wealth, yet we must change our negative mindset and position ourselves to be blessed, and we do not have to worry about anything (Philippians 4:6).

Spiritual growth is also crucial for transcending our humanity. As humans, we sometimes encounter challenges such as food, clothing, and shelter. When some individuals lack these necessities, dissatisfaction and worry arise, and faithlessness becomes noticeable.

God recognizes our human vulnerability, which is why He has graciously bestowed His Spirit upon us, empowering us to transcend our humanity. With the enabling power of the Holy Spirit, we can navigate life’s complexities without being weighed down by worry, doubt, or fear. The inner battle between our human desires and God’s power can only be won by walking in the Spirit, as exhorted in Galatians 5:16. When we observe individuals indulging in their carnal desires, it indicates a lack of spiritual maturity and a failure to walk in the Spirit. Be assured that, with the help of the Holy Spirit, you can live a life of holiness, even in this corrupt and perverse generation, for God has breathed His Spirit of holiness into you to overcome every sin, worry, doubt, and fear.
