Psalm 37 commences with a prudent counsel for believers, urging them not to be perturbed by the seemingly prosperous lives of evildoers, nor to envy those who engage in wickedness.
Witnessing the wicked prosper through nefarious means, acquiring wealth and material possessions such as posh cars and mansions, may tempt individuals into envying them if they lack understanding of the ultimate fate that awaits such individuals. This could lead even the righteous to regret their virtuous acts and lament like the Psalmist in Psalm 73:12-13, saying, “Behold, these are the ungodly, who are at ease; they increase in riches. Surely I have cleansed my hands in vain, and washed my hands in innocence.”
The apparent anomaly of the wicked prospering while the righteous struggle can be a painful reality. The Psalmist expressed similar sentiments in Psalm 73:16-17, “When I thought how to understand this, it was too painful for me; until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I understood their end.”
Finding solace in the understanding of their tragic end, he came to realize the folly of regretting his virtuous acts, acknowledging his ignorance, as reflected in Psalm 73:22, “I was so foolish and ignorant; I was like a beast before You.”
Today, many individuals are driven to extreme measures in pursuit of wealth, power, and influence. To avoid being cut off with the wicked, one must resist participating in their dubious endeavors and shun their destructive trajectory. Instead of desiring to emulate the wicked, one should aspire to follow Jesus Christ’s teachings and heed His warning in Luke 12:15, which cautions against covetousness and reminds us that life’s value lies not in material abundance.
The conclusion of our earthly journey far outweighs the significance of the present moment. Psalm 52:6-7 reveals the ultimate fate of those who disregard God: “The righteous also shall see and fear, and shall laugh at him, saying, ‘Here is the man who did not make God his strength, but trusted in the abundance of riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness.'” We must not covet the fleeting prosperity of the wicked, for their prosperity will be short-lived.
Referring back to Psalm 37:3, the Scripture admonishes, “Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness.” Trust encompasses a confident assurance in God’s capability to bring to fruition our desires that conform to His will. Moreover, it is a tangible expression of unwavering faith in the infallible God.
It is commendable for believers to trust in the Lord, yet it is equally crucial for them to engage in good works, as these actions will not only testify to their character but also advocate on their behalf, just as Mordecai’s good deeds facilitated his ascent and catalyzed his advancement.
Trust in the Lord serves as the key to constantly feeding on God’s unwavering faithfulness. Consider the following illustrative analogy: God’s great faithfulness can be likened to an inexhaustible well of water, with our trust representing the bucket that accesses this well. Just as the well’s water supply remains constant, so too does God’s faithfulness endure forever. However, the prerequisite to benefiting from His faithfulness involves activating our faith, allowing it to guide our trust in His promises. Ultimately, our trust grants us access to the boundless reservoir of God’s faithfulness, mirroring the way a bucket provides access to the water contained within a well.
As we take pleasure in the Lord, we ought to also entrust our path to Him, given the wickedness of these times. We find ourselves in the last days, where depravity is on the rise and uncertainty prevails. Without committing our way to the Lord, we risk falling prey to evil. Therefore, pray incessantly and for everything, that you may avoid becoming a victim. Establish and maintain a personal prayer altar.
There exists a realm of rest in the Lord, where one waits patiently for His timing, yet many individuals nowadays are inclined towards seeking instant solutions, often forgetting that a process of time is inherent to achieving every desired outcome.
