Pastor Urges Christians To Delight Themselves In The Lord And See Their Desires Granted

 By Isaiah Ogedegbe

Rev. Dr. Lawrence O. Agbirekomi, on Wednesday evening of 22nd April 2026, delivered a profound message titled: “Delighting Yourself In The Lord,” drawing from Psalm 37:1-4 and highlighting the blessings God bestows on the righteous.

The senior pastor of Gihon City Bible Church described ‘delighting in the Lord’ as a state of experiencing great joy, immense enjoyment, high satisfaction, and extreme pleasure in God’s presence.

According to him, finding joy and pleasure in God’s presence, similar to King David’s longing in Psalm 27:4, results in the desires of one’s heart becoming aligned with His will, guaranteeing they are inherently good and pleasing to Him. Prioritizing God as one’s primary joy, delight, and focus leads to a transformation of desires, synchronizing them with His will and ensuring their consistent fulfillment. Drawing closer to God through prayer causes personal desires to realign with His righteous purposes, effectively making one desire what He desires. Only desires that align with God’s will are granted by Him because they reflect His own heart.

The cleric noted that delighting in the Lord involves prioritizing intimacy with Him above personal needs, as demonstrated in the Lord’s Prayer, where the paramount concern is God’s Kingdom, resulting in the desires of one’s heart being met through alignment with His will.

He stressed that delighting in the Lord is crucial for God to grant the desires of our hearts. He, however, warned that a transactional approach to our relationship with God is misguided, rendering wealth an unsuitable yardstick for measuring spirituality among believers.

He observed that the image of Christ is likely not formed in many believers because they misunderstand prayer, which they believe is about getting everything they want from God without first delighting in the Lord and fostering intimacy with Him in the place of prayer.

He asserted that delighting in the Lord is not about using prayer as a means to get everything one desires from God; rather, it is about aligning the desires of our hearts with His will and finding satisfaction in His presence. It is also not a guarantee for every self-serving desire; rather, it is an assurance that God will not grant desires that are detrimental to our well-being.
