PEOPLES DEMOCRATIC PARTY (PDP), DELTA STATE CHAPTER
CONDOLENCE MESSAGE ON THE PASSING OF DISTINGUISHED SENATOR PETER ONYELUKA NWAOBOSHI

The Peoples Democratic Party, Delta State Chapter, received with profound sadness and deep sense of loss the news of the passing of Distinguished Senator Peter Onyeluka Nwaoboshi of Ibusa Community, Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State, who reportedly departed this world on Friday, 19th December, 2025. Our hearts are with the Nwaoboshi family, the constituents of Delta North Senatorial District, and the government and people of Delta State at this difficult time.

Senator Nwaoboshi was a principled, patriotic, and consummate public servant who served Delta State and the Federal Republic of Nigeria with distinction in various capacities. His passing leaves a void that will not be easily filled in the annals of our political history. At a time when our political space is challenged by a scarcity of experienced, courageous, and principled leadership, the loss of a statesman of his stature is a painful blow to the state and the nation at large.

Although death has depleted the ranks of eminent political leaders in Delta State and Nigeria, we take solace in the enduring legacies Senator Nwaoboshi bequeathed—legacies that will continue to guide and inspire emerging leaders for generations to come.

As the Roman poet Horace wrote, “Non omnis moriar” – “I shall not wholly die.” Though death is inevitable, the deeds and legacy of men who serve with courage, conviction, and dedication endure, living on in the memories of those they touched and the institutions they strengthened. Senator Nwaoboshi’s life and public service exemplify this truth.

Senator Nwaoboshi began his career in public service in 1979 as an aide to the then Military Governor of the defunct Bendel State, Brigadier-General Samuel Ogbemudia. This early exposure to governance laid the foundation for a lifelong commitment to public affairs. He subsequently pursued formal legal education, earning a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree from the University of Benin in 1986, and later a Master of Laws (LL.M) degree from Delta State University, thereby enriching his public service experience with sound legal scholarship.

With the return to democratic governance, he served as Political Adviser to Governor James Onanefe Ibori of Delta State, before his appointment as Commissioner for Agriculture and Special Duties, a position he held from 2000 to 2006. He also served at the federal level as Chairman of the Nigerian Railway Corporation.

In 2008, Senator Nwaoboshi emerged as Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Delta State and was re-elected for a second term. During his stewardship, he instituted far-reaching reforms that restored discipline, order, and internal cohesion within the party. His tenure was characterised by firm leadership, principled administration, and an uncompromising commitment to party supremacy. It was under his chairmanship that the magnificent party secretariat was conceived and built, a lasting testament to his vision, organisational capacity, and administrative excellence. He was, in the strictest sense of the word, a true party man—an administrator par excellence and a core disciplinarian whose leadership left an indelible imprint on the party’s structure and culture. He led the party until 2014, when he resigned to contest for the Senate.

His senatorial ambition culminated in his election as Senator representing Delta North Senatorial District from 2015 to 2023. During his tenure in the Nigerian Senate, Senator Peter Onyeluka Nwaoboshi served prominently on several key committees, most notably as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Niger Delta Affairs, a role that placed him at the forefront of legislative oversight and development initiatives in the Niger Delta region. Through these assignments, he demonstrated steadfast commitment to regional development, federal infrastructure advancement, and matters of national importance affecting the oil-producing South-South geopolitical zone.

Senator Nwaoboshi was not without human imperfections, as no leader is. Yet, he was, in every fair sense, a man of courage, conviction, and honour. History will interrogate his record, as it does with all legacies, but his contributions to party politics, governance, and national development remain indelible.

On behalf of the entire Peoples Democratic Party family in Delta State, we extend our deepest condolences to the Nwaoboshi family, his associates, the constituents of Delta North Senatorial District, and the government and people of Delta State. We pray that Almighty God grants his immediate family the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss, forgives his shortcomings, rewards his virtues, and grants his soul eternal rest.

Good night, Oracle.
May your resourceful soul rest in perfect peace. Amen.

Signed:
Dr. Michael Tidi Esq.
